It does seem a very long time since I had to apply for a real job. The sort of job that would actually pay a salary and offer scope for advancement up the ladder to nearly important status. In my day, in the last century (ho ho), the best schools probably had some kind of careers advice operation. It probably helped sort the youngster out with the choice of going to university or going out to work. There wasn’t as much choice in schools then as there are now. You either passed y our 11+ exam and thus joined the other hallowed persons at the local grammer school, or (more likely), you went to the local secondary school and began a path towards a fairly mediocre academic achievement leading to a narrow choice of careers.
