There are so many different courses available at school these days – unlike in the middle of the last century – and that sounds very odd to hear it put like that! – the choices were not made at school but more as a result of the route you went through it. The 11 plus had a lot to answer for. Those who passed went on to grammer school and often, on to university and a long term career. The rest, who may not have failed it by much, went to local comprehensive or secondary schools and moved into work from there.
Today with so much available to young folk, there is no career barred to anyone. Women can apply for the more traditionally male jobs – one factor requiring major consideration being a physical one should it need heavy lifting or carrying a human body for any distance – planning to get those qualifications will ensure a chance at the career.
