When the careers teacher came around in my fourth year at school and asked, without expectation of hearing anything at all revolutionary or startling asking “and what do you see yourself doing as a career . . . .” She was greeted with equal amounts of surprise and slight indignation. Had the woman no idea she was adressing the best secretary destined to hit the jobs market ?! My mother was an exquisitely trained shorthand secretary and I had known nothing else so naturaly didn’t argue when she and my father instructed me to take shorthand and typing in my final two years.
It stood me in very good stead but if only I’d had the chance to look beyond the easy route. How different today where every child starts school on equal terms and can achieve any professional post they desire. There need be no barriers to a legal career of any sort these days.
